The transitional process
Abstract
The first major structural decision in the transition from adolescence to adulthood involves the decision to leave school. Two sets of semiarbitrary factors influence this decision: the statutory legal leaving age (usually 15 or 16 years of age in Australia); and completion of the final year of schooling (usually Grade 12 or Form VI in Australia, completed at age 17 or 18). The other major determinants of this transition phase involve the complex interplay of factors within the individual, within the school context and within the social demography of the family.
