Abstract

One of the aims of CDPs is ’a better understanding and more comprehensive tackling of social needs’. This chapter briefly examines the concept of social need and relates it to the differing perceptions of the social needs of immigrants in Batley, a town in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Data on the perceptions of local authority officials, councillors, members of the community relations council and teachers - collected through interviews, the examination of official documents and observation at meetings - is compared with the perceptions of the immigrants themselves as expressed by immigrant leaders in interviews and in a wider survey of immigrant households.
