Abstract

The Tynemouth CDP (now North Tyneside) was established in October 1972 with the appointment of a project director. This followed discussions over a period of some fifteen months between council officials and the Home Office. The decision to put forward Tynemouth as a possible area for a project was taken after the Home Office central research team had examined the 1966 census data for a number of towns in the northern region. The selection of Tynemouth completed the choosing of twelve project areas. Since October 1972, the main activities of the Tynemouth project team, which was finally recruited by February 1973, has been familiarisation with the project area, the assimilation of vast quantities of information coming from the local authority and the Home Office, the development of a wider perspective of the issues and problems presented to it, and the implementation of some initial action strategy. During this twelve month period there has been no research team.
