Abstract

All forms of counselling had much in common. The term came to be used either as an aspect of all the helping professions, as in Halmos ( 1965 ) The Faith of the Counsellors , or an element in other professional practice, for example the law, or, increasingly, as an activity in its own right. It might be either individual or group counselling. As Thompson and Kahn ( 1970 ) pointed out, it drew upon dynamic theories of group behaviour but used these in a different way and also theories of social casework, but was not a technique for use solely by social workers.
