Abstract

This chapter highlights the critical role that mentors and supportive supervisors play in professional growth, particularly in the early stages of a healthcare career. It discusses how effective mentors provide guidance, feedback, and access to opportunities that can shape both skills and leadership identity. Through a reflective example from an Administrator in Training experience, the chapter illustrates how mentorship fosters not only professional competence but also a deeper sense of purpose and values. It also explains that while supervisors may offer valuable guidance, they are not always ideal mentors, and professionals may need to seek mentorship beyond their immediate workplace. The chapter concludes by encouraging readers to intentionally choose organizations and leaders who promote development, integrity, and a culture of support.
