Abstract

This chapter encourages students and emerging professionals in healthcare administration to approach academic guidance with discernment. While advisors and faculty often have good intentions, their recommendations may not always reflect real-world conditions or individual goals. The chapter explores how to manage academic load responsibly, select courses and minors strategically, and understand the diverse backgrounds and biases of faculty members. It also highlights the importance of seeking career guidance from practitioners who have current industry experience. Special emphasis is placed on taking ownership of practicum placements to align them with career interests and professional development goals. Ultimately, the chapter urges readers to engage actively with their education, think critically about advice received, and prioritize learning experiences that best prepare them for meaningful, sustainable leadership roles in healthcare.
