Abstract

This chapter explores the imagined development of the Green Hike Eco-Trail, a visionary model of smart and sustainable eco-tourism in the 2030s. By integrating co-creation, digital storytelling, and emerging technologies such as mobile apps, AR/VR, and AI-powered personalization, the trail exemplifies how future tourism experiences can be collaboratively shaped by tourists, local communities, and developers. The initiative emphasizes sustainable infrastructure, including renewable energy microgrids and circular economy practices, while fostering emotional engagement through immersive narratives and ecological awareness. Grounded in theories of co-creation, the experience economy, sustainable tourism development, and narrative design, this chapter offers a conceptual framework for how tourism in the 2030s can be inclusive, transformative, and resilient. It underscores the critical role of technology in facilitating stakeholder collaboration and highlights how participatory storytelling contributes to sustainability education and behavior change. Designed as a teaching tool, this chapter includes discussion prompts, model responses, and a PowerPoint slide deck for classroom use. Overall, it presents the Green Hike Eco-Trail as a forward-thinking blueprint for next-generation tourism that aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and promotes mutual benefit for both people and the planet.
