Abstract

This chapter evaluates the current situation in three heritage tourism locations in the Middle East. These historical sites already attract tourists but they are not listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The research presented here explores the conflicting challenges of (i) attracting more tourists, (ii) protecting and interpreting the heritage, whilst also (iii) considering how the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals can be respected and implemented. As an outcome, the work here presents a comprehensive plan for the development and restructuring of these specific tourist attractions and integrating them with the surrounding environment to achieve economic, social, and environmental sustainability.
