What Leaders Must Understand About the Technical Core
Abstract
Every era of transformation produces a new form of illiteracy. During the Industrial Revolution, financial illiteracy was a significant issue; leaders who could not read balance sheets lost their firms. In the digital age, data illiteracy led executives who failed to understand information flows to cede competitive ground. In the age of AI agents, the new illiteracy is technical illiteracy in governance. The paradox of progress is that strategy is now inseparable from technical architecture. Executives cannot meaningfully govern what they cannot conceptually grasp. Strategic authority depends on informed curiosity. This chapter closes the final gap in this book’s argument: the one between vision and execution, between boardroom strategy and system architecture. It is not a technical manual; it is a fluency guide for leaders who must understand the machinery of the future without becoming engineers. The goal is not to code, but to comprehend. To know just enough to interrogate wisely, govern confidently, and prevent the most dangerous phrase in corporate transformation: “I didn’t know how it worked.”
