Abstract

This chapter focuses on the frameworks and pedagogies that have resulted from the research and practice of English-Medium Instruction (EMI) in higher education. The chapter begins with some defining work on pedagogy and explains how pedagogy is understood in this book. It then focuses on the different approaches of EMI, English for Specific Purposes (ESAP), Integrating Content and Language in Higher Education (ICLHE), and English-Medium Education in Multilingual University Settings (EMEMUS) to teaching and analysing EMI practices and contexts. The discussion points to the drawbacks but also the potential of these approaches as higher education pedagogies and/or analytical tools and shows how they are connected to or have built on one another. The chapter ends with some thoughts on what can be drawn from the discussion for use in the development of a plurilingual pedagogy.
