Abstract

This chapter begins by providing further detail of the meaning of plurilingualism and what is meant by plurilingual education. This is followed by a discussion of translanguaging, code switching, biliteracy and pluriliteracies, and translingual writing as the current dominant theories and approaches to plurilingual education. It is noted that these approaches originate from and have been developed mainly in primary- and secondary-level language education but have inspired plurilingual approaches to tertiary education. In line with the aims of this book, however, this chapter ultimately homes in on tertiary education beyond language studies and extracts the plurilingual pedagogic strategies that have been used in Bilingual Education (BE) and English-Medium Instruction (EMI) programmes in universities around the world for the purpose of informing the pedagogy forwarded in this book.
