Abstract

Chapter 4 examines the escalating anti-DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) movement in the United States, focusing on legislative, legal, and media-driven efforts to dismantle DEI initiatives in higher education. The chapter opens with the case of Dr. Arica Brandford, a Black female faculty member at Texas A&M University, who became the target of a coordinated campaign by right-wing groups like the American Accountability Foundation (AAF). The chapter details how the strategies deployed in this campaign are part of a broader, well-orchestrated effort by conservative organizations to maintain traditional power structures amidst demographic changes. It also explores the use of model legislation—often originating from groups like ALEC and the Manhattan Institute and Heritage Foundation—to introduce anti-DEI bills in state legislatures, shutter DEI offices, and undermine academic freedom and tenure protections. Recent laws and proposals even more specifically target DEI programming, with some bills specifying banned job titles and activities. The chapter concludes by highlighting the chilling effect of these measures on higher education and the broader implications for academic governance and civil rights.
