Abstract

Chapter 7 addresses the policy implications and recommendations for higher education institutions navigating the current wave of anti-DEI legislation and executive orders. Drawing on research and interview findings, the chapter highlights proactive institutional response strategies. In its call to action, the chapter identifies three potential phases in the evolution of DEI practices. Key recommendations include conducting legal reviews of DEI programs, engaging stakeholders in transparent dialogue, and reframing DEI efforts using language rooted in civil rights and foundational American values. The chapter urges institutions to avoid anticipatory compliance, which can erode academic freedom, and stresses the importance of public leadership and solidarity through alliances and educational associations. It also advocates for integrated HR/diversity talent structures, strategies, and processes that create more inclusive and equitable workplaces. Despite daunting challenges, the current environment offers an opportunity to strengthen equal opportunity initiatives, foster inclusive campus climates, and defend academic freedom and institutional autonomy through skilled legal expertise and persistent collective action.
