Super Cyclone and the Dynamics of Evacuation Behaviour in India
Abstract
Evacuation behaviour associated with the super cyclone–affected coastal Odisha is described based upon data from field survey. This chapter highlights the complexity of evacuation behaviour, which can best be conceptualised as a series of interdependent processes. The findings underline the importance of social structural processes and four basic social-psychological categorical variables: (a) warning systems, (b) risk perception formation, (c) risk level of the area, and (d) exogenous influences. In particular, appropriate attention is given to discover perceptions that motivate evacuations and factors that direct perceptual outcomes.
