The common priesthood in Jean Calvin
Abstract
As we will see in this section, 1 Calvin speaks on several occasions and in different wordings, both in his Institutes and commentaries, on Christ’s priesthood relating it to all believers. 2 Although Calvin follows the same line of reasoning as Luther, he nonetheless did not articulate this doctrine as Luther did. 3 Pont remarks that Calvin did not deal with the common priesthood as a separate doctrine and that it is striking that Calvin discussed the universal priesthood only after having discussed extensively his doctrine on ministry. 4
