Abstract

The Reformation is an extremely complex phenomenon. There are many historical factors to be taken into account, such as the state of religion (spirituality), theology, philosophy and culture (humanism, renaissance), politics (the emergence of the nation-states), economy (taxation) and science (invention of the printing press), just to name a few. This section only deals with two issues, which are relevant for understanding Luther’s ideas on the common priesthood: the division of society and Church in so-called “estates” and the poor spiritual state of the spiritual estate. 3
