The common priesthood in Luther
Abstract
Luther’s doctrine on the common priesthood plays an essential role within his theological framework. 1 As we have seen in the preceding section, the priesthood of all believers is closely related and interconnected with the right and duty of spiritual, direct and immediate access to stand before God the Father, face-to-face, here and now. Only in this way can believers obtain eschatological certainty for the future, while in the present—that they are propitious to God in all that they do. This theological position is the axis around which Luther’s whole doctrine and spirituality rotate.
