Abstract

Women candidates for the White House cannot escape their gender. It will shape how they are evaluated in the media and how they choose to present themselves. Hillary Clinton became a public person as a first lady, the President’s spouse. She was subjected to almost casual judgments of her identity as a woman—her looks, dress, speaking, and feminism. These only intensified in her two attempts to become president.
