Gender and/in Nation: Examining the Collective Agency of Women in (Imagining) Meitei Community
Abstract
As the song cited-above goes, the image of nurturing and dauntless Meitei woman despite vicissitudes of life holds sway over the collective imagination of people in Manipur. Such imagination has become part of Meitei lore and legacy. Images of toiling yet resilient mothers are often evoked to draw strength from, particularly in the public space, when the occasion demands. This image of self-sacrificing and resilient women has been cast as the exemplary identity for Meitei women through cultural productions, and women themselves reinforce these images in many situations of life.
