Whitening Voices and Black Lives Matter: A Raciolinguistic Enquiry
Abstract
Colonisation is associated with economic and linguistic imperialism. Since identity crucially depends on language usage in terms of world views and a sense of self, colonisers have often used language as a tool to establish non-western ideas in the dominant discourse of the colonised. The effect is that the colonised population struggled to master the foreign language to gain a sense of self. However, as long as colonisation is alive, so does resistance continue since language according to Maldonado-Torres (2007) (cited in Sayedayn, 2021 ), “as a generative tool of power, is omnipresent.”
