Abstract

α-Cyclodextrin-NaCl mixtures were investigated as solid-surface substrates for room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) and fluorescence (RTF) from adsorbed organic compounds. To understand the physical and chemical interactions needed for RTP and RTF, luminescence and reflectance spectra were obtained for four adsorbed model compounds. α-Cyclodextrin inclusion complexes were prepared for the four model compounds, and luminescence and reflectance spectra of the inclusion complexes were obtained. Comparison of the luminescence and reflectance spectra of the model compounds adsorbed on the 80% α-cyclodextrin-NaCl mixture with the spectra obtained from the prepared inclusion complexes showed that the inclusion complexes were formed with the 80% α-cyclodextrin mixture. The spectral evidence for benzo(f)quinoline indicated that the nitrogen in the ring system was hydrogen bonded to one of the hydroxyl groups on the rim of the eyelodextrin molecule for the prepared inclusion complex but not for the compound adsorbed on the 80% α-eyelodextrin mixture.
