Abstract

Samples of polyethylene coated with Az-Cup-E (a commercial organosilane) were irradiated at 308 nm using an excimer laser. The resulting surfaces were analyzed by Attenuated Total Internal Reflectance Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR). It was determined that the coating was photolyzed with the following efficiencies: 400 Joules/cm 2 to photolyze one half of the coating with no sensitizer, 20 Joules/cm 2 to photolyze one half of the coating in the presence of a photosensitizer. Although the coating was photolyzed there was no evidence that the photolysis product had chemically bonded to the polyethylene substrate.
