Abstract

Growth of breast cancer is regulated by steroid hormones when specific receptors are present. However, breast cancer can metabolize steroid hormones, this activity being more evident in receptor negative cases 1 . Among the steroids measured in breast cancer tissue fractions, 17 β -estradiol (E2) plays a major role. E2 may be trasformed into estriol 2 (E3) through 16α—hydroxylation 2 , or, through 2-hydroxylation, into 2-hydroxyestradiol, a compound which, differently from estriol 3 - 4 , lacks peripheral estrogenic activity 5 .
