Abstract

In the AS-30D rat hepatoma hexokinase (HK) activity is elevated more than 100-fold relative to rat liver tissue. The relative increase in HK activity is 8 times greater than that of any other glycolytic enzyme. HK is the only glycolytic enzyme of AS-30D cells to exhibit a mitochondrial/cytoplasmic specific activity ratio greater than 1, showing a 3.5-fold enhancement in the mitochondrial fraction (1). Despite of liver which usually possesses HK 1, II, III and HK IV (or glucokinase), being the last the most abundant one (2), AS-30D mitochondrially-bound HK is mainly constituted by isoenzymes which greatly resemble HK I and II (1).
