Introduction
Abstract
In order to identify events pertinent to the transformation of normal cells to the neoplastic state, basic information is obtained by comparing morphologic and biochemical characteristics of primary and metastatic cancer specimens with those of normal tissue from which they derive. In order to avoid uncertainties resulting from cellular heterogeneity, cells of the particular type undergoing transformation are isolated from normal tissues and from the corresponding tumours, comparing biochemical characteristics by direct analysis or by observing their behaviour in culture.
