Abstract

The Millis Study Commission on Pharmacy attempted to answer the question of what the appropriate education for pharmacists in the future, including the 1990s and the year 2000, should be. It examined the health care system, the relationship of pharmacy to this system, and provided a number of recommendations for the practice and education of pharmacists. Although the content of the report was not completely new or innovative, many of the predictions in the Millis Commission report later came into being and many of the ideas proposed were subsequently implemented. In fact, several of these predictions have been occurring gradually over time and many of the recommendations are still in various stages of implementation. After reading the Millis report and reflecting on the present practice of pharmacy, one can only conclude that change is often very slow in occurring.
