Abstract

To understand how pronunciation skills develop in a second language and how to teach them, or to appreciate the impact of pronunciation on day-to-day life requires an understanding of how the sound systems of languages are organized and how they function to communicate meaning. All languages make use of the same basic vocal tract mechanisms to create distinct phonological and phonetic systems that exploit categorical, allophonic and gradient differences in segments and prosody to express meaning.
