Abstract

While visitors to Akan communities at any period of history could not fail to notice the wide variety of vocal ensembles involving women and the contributions of women to social life, some types of these ensembles are centuries old whereas others are of recent creation. In this first section I will give a brief account of the different kinds of music current among the Akan over approximately the last hundred years, and how these genres have evolved.
