Abstract

SamulNori emerged at a time of rapid modernization. Within the new world there was space for the old. The nationalist agenda had countered the decline of itinerant troupes and local bands by appointments within the state preservation system, and the folk heritage had been appropriated as part of minjung popular culture. There was space for something modern built from tradition, since concert audiences demanded more, and SamulNori obliged.
