Abstract

Adapting traditional genres has not been the sole preserve of SamulNori and other contemporary percussion bands. Throughout the twentieth century, folksongs and p’ansori , epic storytelling through song, have undergone development, latterly as both genres became icons of identity. Both have been elevated and marked for preservation by the state preservation system, and both have been appropriated on many a university campus as part of minjung popular culture. These, then, are the genres discussed in this chapter.
