Abstract

Ripon lies on the west flank of the Vale of York, 21 miles/33 kms north-west of York. Thomas Gent surmised that the site ‘wanted nothing of the advantages of nature to adorn it. The pleasant streams of a beautiful river, now call’d Ure, on the North, and those proceeding from the Rivulet Skell on the south, were unspeakably attractive and inviting’. 1 ‘The troublous Skell’, as it was described by Spenser in his Faerie Queen , joins the main river some three quarters of a mile (1.2 km) downstream from the Minster.
