Abstract

As suggested in the previous chapter, a study of how the Trecento commentators responded to Dante’s use of metaphor has first of all to come to grips with their exceptionally flexible use of the relevant terms. The first recension of Pietro Alighieri’s commentary to the Commedia presents a particularly acute example of the difficulties involved. 1
