Abstract

Dante began his career as a lyric poet in Florence towards the end of the thirteenth century, and his Commedia , though very different in range and scope from these early poems, unmistakably bears the mark of his apprenticeship in this area. No discussion of metaphor in Dante can ignore these poems, especially since it has been argued that Dante became a metaphorical poet rather than beginning as one. 1
