Abstract

The ideals and policies that Americans have at home determine their ideals and policies around the globe. Between 1900 and 1917 the Progressive Party exemplified this rule of American history. As Progressives searched desperately for order and stability at home amid the industrial revolution, so overseas they used the new American economic and military power in an attempt to impose order in such areas as China, the Caribbean, Mexico, and western Europe. Many Progressives believed that only in orderly societies could the United States hope to find political cooperation and long-term markets for the glut of goods and capital produced by American corporations. Without such help from foreign friends, unemployment and radical movements could threaten Progressive programs at home.
