Abstract

Much scholarship, and many artworks and exhibitions, have addressed the concerns of this text since it was written in 2008. The intervening seven years have seen a number of significant exhibitions of work by the artists discussed and, as with any text, this one embraces references that with distance seem less urgent. Any writer will over time gather new knowledge that impacts on opinions, and on revisiting a text she will always know that it needs to be improved. Nonetheless, the text here stands as it was first written, and an afterword, written in March 2015, points to four research orientation points that rearticulate and recalibrate the proposals for thought. There are many more; however, these are the most personally pertinent. The bearing of these on the arguments presented here is left as fuel for a future essay.
