The Taft Administration and the Sherman Antitrust Act
Abstract
President Taft’s conception and enforcement of the Sherman Antitrust Act was somewhat complicated by a rather naive attitude toward the Sherman Act and big business, by the influence of Attor ney General George W. Wickersham, who was given great discre tion in antitrust proceedings, by Taft’s often emotional response to businessmen, and by the President’s legalism—laws were to be “faithfully executed.”
