Description of the Area

The northeast coast of New Guinea is the territory called Kaiser Wilhelm Land by the Germans during their colonial period, and is now part of the Mandated Territory of New Guinea ( Fig. 1 ). This study was made from Alitoa, a mountain village, a scant two days’ inland from the coast and directly south of Dakuar on the beach, among a people who had no name for the entire linguistic group, no political unity, and no accurate knowledge of the geographical limits of their distinct culture and language.
