Abstract

Estimated to be nearly 5 million years old, the Aral Sea is a large saline lake in Central Asia, located between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. It sits in the center of the great deserts of central Asia—the Betpakdala, Karakum, and Kyzyl Kum—and is surrounded by the Turan Plain with mountains on the east and south. The region receives less than 10 inches (25 centimeters) of rain per year, and the area as a whole is subject to high rates of evaporation due to an arid weather pattern and landscape.
