Abstract

The Izembek wetlands are a remote subarctic coastal ecosystem located on the Alaskan Peninsula. The area designated in 1960 as the Izembek National Wildlife Refuge consists of 650 square miles (1,684 square kilometers), or 416,000 acres (168,349 hectares), of nearly treeless habitat, including mountains, active volcanoes, glaciers, foothills, upland meadows, freshwater lakes and rivers, thermal springs, and expansive wetlands. It is bordered by water on two sides, with the Bering Sea on the north and the Pacific Ocean on the south. Izembek is roughly 634 miles (1,020 kilometers) southwest of the City of Anchorage.
