Abstract

The Kopuatai Peat Dome is the largest inland freshwater wetland in New Zealand, an independent country consisting of two main landmasses (the North Island and the South Island) and several smaller islands, in the southwest Pacific Ocean. Measuring 40 square miles (104 square kilometers) in size, the dome is bounded by the main channels of the Piako and Waihou rivers in the low-lying Hauraki Plains of the central North Island.
