Abstract

Although the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries witnessed a global recognition of the environmental benefits that wetland ecosystems offer, difficult hurdles remain to manage and protect these sensitive and critical resource areas. The worldwide human population growth of 82.8 million people per year is paramount among the many challenges of wetland preservation. Fragmented approaches to water resources management and wetland protection exist both within and among most nations.
