Abstract

Wetlands are unique, biologically productive areas that historically have been misrepresented and undervalued. Compared to many of the world’s other natural features, such as mountains and forests, wetlands have not received similar recognition as environmentally significant resource areas. As discussed throughout this book, most wetlands have been treaded upon, dumped into, filled in, and otherwise degraded for years. Only in the latter part of the twentieth century did a respect for these distinctive ecosystems emerge.
