Abstract

From a distance, a wetland appears as a harsh and dangerous place. Seemingly endless swarms of hungry mosquitoes and other flying insects, strong odors, shallow standing water, and deep mud often dominate the landscape. There are interwoven stands of trees, shrubs, and vines, often so dense that you cannot get through them without a struggle. There are poisonous snakes, carnivorous alligators and crocodiles, and not a lot of dry and solid ground on which to stand.
