Abstract

The Danube River flows from west to east and traverses ten countries in a 1,767-mile (2,843-kilometer) journey from its headwaters in the Black Forest in southwestern Germany to the Black Sea in eastern Romania. As Europe’s second-longest river (after Russia’s Volga River), its name comes from the ancient Iranian word danu, meaning “river.”
