Abstract
Located in the southern portion of Florida, the Everglades is one of the world’s largest wetland areas. It originates in the city of Orlando, where the Kissimmee River drains into Lake Okeechobee, the second-largest freshwater lake lying completely within the United States. Occupying nearly 4,000 square miles (10,360 square kilometers), the Everglades spans 40 miles (64 kilometers) east to west and 100 miles (161 kilometers) north to south and drains into the Gulf of Mexico at its southern terminus.
