Abstract

Has synthetic organic chemistry already reached its final frontiers as a science? Quite a few of our fellow-chemists would say: yes. They would argue that given the necessary level of skilful professionalism, by now we have acquired the modus operandi to synthesize almost any compound regardless of its complexity. This judgement is based on the achievements of the so called Woodward-era, which culminated in the synthesis of vitamin B-12.
