Abstract

The term usability is sometimes used to indicate a particular approach to the issues of HCI. With this in mind, the concepts that make up usability are considered, and a number of definitions of usability are outlined and discussed. The usability approach is concerned with both obtaining user requirements in the early stages of design, and with evaluating systems that have been built. Consequently, a process for performing a User Needs Analysis is outlined. The issue of how to evaluate the usability of systems is then addressed. Finally, some of the problems with the usability approach are considered.
