Surnames from Native Personal-Names
Abstract
Surnames formed by adding to the christian name that of the father or mother are numerous and early. A few are found before the Conquest and they steadily become more frequent from 1066 onwards: Aluuinus Cubold 1066 (OE Cūðbeald), Lemmer Brihtmer c1095 (OE Beorhtmǣr), Goduinus Alfit 1066 (OE Æ lfgȳð, f), Æluric Leueday c1095 (OE Lēofdæg, f), Alfstanus Clac c975 (ODa Klak), Osgot Sveyn 1045 (ON Sveinn). Although, at this date, these were not hereditary surnames, they anticipate the modern Cobbold, Brightmore, Loveday, Clack and Swayne.
