Arguing about Health Issues
Abstract
The intention of the paper is to invite discussion on the potential of ‘argument’ as a mode for exploring health issues in school-based health education. It is suggested that ‘argument’, in the sense of making a case, supporting it with evidence and defending it when challenged, seems an appropriate approach to many health matters. The findings of a research study which included an element of ‘argument’ in the eliciting of health knowledge are described and the implications for teaching are discussed.
