Abstract

Literature on smoking among pre-adolescents is reviewed. A psychosocial model of behaviour developed by Fishbein is applied to describe characteristics of the smoking habit. Sixty-four subjects randomly selected were interviewed to elicit their salient beliefs about smoking; social referents who might influence them should they smoke; and activities in which they are involved most frequently in their spare time. Results are presented and are found to be consistent with findings from other studies.
